Summary | 0001340: no SMART for ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe and other nVidia based motherboards
Description | bios is 1502 SMART is enabled in bios no info via speedfan, Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics, WinDLG.EXE, or several other programs. drive 1 WD50 01AALS-00L3B WD Caviar Black drive 2 WD50 00AAKS-00A7B WD Caviar Blue
Additional Information | I am sure that this is not your problem. I am just at a standstill trying to make this work. ASUS website does not mention SMART and the users manual only shows how to enable it in the bios. If you can help me in any way I will be in your debt Thanks.

Well, I found CrystalDiskInfo [http://crystalmark.info/?lang=en] and it works so it's not a BIOS/VISTA problem. |
I'm going to investigate. Most likely, a different access method to the hard disk is required. |
If someone else is experiencing exactly the same issue, with the same fix, please, post here the exact motherboard model (an english URL would be greatly appreciated too). I will try to buy the hardware to perform tests and add full support. When I will have the hardware I will certainly be able to support it. Thank you. |
Update: I installed speedfan on my wife's PC (same motherboard but running XP 32bit) and it works fine. I have VISTA 64 and it doesn't work ... so something is different about VISTA 64 |
Have you tried running Speedfan with Admin rights? When using Vista 64bit you must use admin rights to read S.M.A.R.T. data. This is due to Vista and not a Speedfan problem. |
I just tried and no joy! |
Note to Alfredo: In you would like to send me a version with some debugging output enabled I will be glad to run it and send you the output. |
@danbendan Please, send me an email (alfredo [at] almico.com) using an email address where you can receive an executable attachment. I have some beta code for you to try. |
I have this exact same mobo and exact same problem. I used to run XP MCE 32bit with an older speedfan version - SMART worked fine. I now have Vista 64bit with the latest speedfan and SMART information is no longer available. This was a fresh install of vista64 SP1 with latest windows update drivers. After info I found on various forums, I also tried nvidia 570 drivers from nvidia site, no improvement. I am running speed fan as administrator as this was something i also found on various forums. Finally I search speedfan bugs and found this page. I tried crystaldiskinfo like danbendan and also found that that application works (SMART information is available) for me. If you have a debug/beta version of speedfan I can try that for you also. I have 1x samsung HD501LJ (500GB), 1x samsung HD 103UJ (1TB), 2x Seagate ST31500341AS (1.5TB) |
one more piece of information. the seagate 1.5TB was a recent purchase and I had trouble formatting it like everyone else in the world with nvidia 570 chipset. based on information on various forums I upgraded to latest nforce 15.24 http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_vista64_15.24.html. disk formatted at 1.5tb nominal and is now working, but speedfan smart is still NOT working with this nforce driver. |
iancalderbank: the 15.24 version does NOT support the 570 chipset. go to your link and click the products supported tab. nForce 780a nForce 750a nForce 730a / GeForce 8200 nForce 720a / GeForce 8100 nForce 710a nForce 630i/GeForce 7150 nForce 630i/GeForce 7150 nForce 630i/GeForce 7100 nForce 630a/GeForce 7050 PV nForce 630a/GeForce 7025 nForce 610i/GeForce 7050 nForce 430/GeForce 6150 nForce 430/GeForce 6150LE nForce 430/GeForce 6150SE nForce 430/GeForce 6100 nForce 420/GeForce 6100 nForce 410/GeForce 6150LE nForce 410/GeForce 6100 nForce 405/GeForce 6100 nForce 400/GeForce 6100 THE LATEST RELEASE FOR 570 cs is http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_vista64_15.23.html nForce 790i Ultra SLI nForce 790i SLI nForce 780i SLI nForce 750i SLI nForce 680i SLI nForce 680a SLI nForce 680i LT SLI nForce 650i SLI nForce 650i Ultra nForce 590 SLI Intel nForce 590 SLI AMD <----------- my set nForce 570 SLI Intel nForce 570 SLI AMD nForce 570 Ultra AMD nForce 560 nForce 550 nForce 520 nForce4 SLI X16 Intel nForce4 SLI X16 AMD nForce4 SLI Intel nForce4 SLI AMD nForce4 SLI XE Intel nForce4 Ultra Intel nForce4 Ultra AMD nForce4 AMD |

@danbendan Did you receive the exe I sent you a few hours ago? |
I just purchased a complete system based on a nVidia chipset. I purchased the Asus M2N68-CM. I'm going to install Windows XP on it. Let's see if SpeedFan can read SMART values. By the way: are you using SATA, RAID or AHCI mode? |
I purchased an Asus M2N68-CM and did some tests. Windows XP Pro, SATA mode: SpeedFan properly reads SMART. Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, AHCI mode: SpeedFan properly reads SMART. I will keep on testing. |
Ok. At last I managed to reproduce the issue on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Now I have the hardware to work on. Next week I'll work to fix it. |
@danbendan You've got mail. That exe, when RUN AS ADMIN, should be able to access the SMART data from your hard disks. It works fine on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I will refine nVidia support next week. SpeedFan 4.38 beta will be released next week. Improved nVidia support will be in 4.39. |
@danbendan You've got mail. |
Great! Everything works, even if I refactored the whole source code and added new functionalities. |
By the way. I upgraded the bug tracking system. Now you should properly receive notifications. Is this correct? |
@danbendan You've got mail. |
I just got a whole bunch of updates. looks like the system is now sending email correctly. @danbendan - interesting it even let me install it. I got that 15.24 suggestion via some forum. I will try 15.23. @alfredo - you can send me the beta to check it also if you like. Is it possible for it to not need to run as administrator? on vista 64 this means I cannot run speedfan on startup, because its isn't signed (or something like that - vista complains its not microsoft authorised s/w if I try to put it in startup). As the whole point of speedfan is to run all the time, even after unattended reboot, run on startup is the best solution. |
@iancalderbank Yes, updates now are properly notified :-) The latest SpeedFan 4.38 beta 10 should be digitally signed. Do you still get any annoying message? Ah, but I read that you can't run it on startup. I think this is not because of any digital signature, but because you can't run programs that need admin rights from Vista's startup folder. I think you should use "planned actions" or whatever the english translation for it is :-) I will be glad to send the beta. Please, send me an email with this issue id in its subject. |
The English translation should be "task scheduler". The task scheduler allows to run programs with admin rights at startup. |
@iancalderbank Do you have user account control turned on? I have it off, and I start SpeedFan as a task with a delay of a few minutes to allow the first CPU serge to die down. Without the delay it sometimes freezes up. @alfredo when you do 'Scanning ISA BUS at $0290...' do you give control back to windows? It looks like the program is using 100% CPU during your scans and the os cant get time to service interrupts and events. I'd be happy to test the new beta if it would help. |
@dan/norman - UAC is on. I was using startup group, but now using task scheduler with "highest privileges" option set seems to work ok to run speedfan with admin rights at startup. @Alfredo - perhaps this could be added to documentation? have used alfredo's test app, it's reading SMART data correctly. |
@iancalderbank Have you noticed that even with "highest privileges" checked the priority is below normal? It is that way here ... time for more research. (sigh) |
@danbendan Why should the priority be related to the privileges/rights? Running an application with admin rights has nothing to do with running an application with high priority. |
@norman02us Sorry ... my mistake from my main frame programming days. high privilege resulted in more CPU cycles (the thread was moved to the top of the 'waiting to execute' queue resulting in getting control more often.) The security aspects were not part of the OS and I'm just learning about privileges. when I programmed for windows there was a team that set up the security stuff on the server, It was voodoo to me. :) |
This issue should be fixed in the forthcoming new beta. If anybody wants to give the beta a try, just mail me. |
