This behaviour is know on Vista and it you are correct, it's not Speedfan but Windows which prevents HDD temps and S.M.A.R.T. data to be read without admin rights.

Do experience the same behaviour with XP? Until now I thought this only happens with Vista.

I should have mentioned that I am running XP Pro. So this is definitely an issue with XP Pro. I dont know about Vista as I dont run it.

I experienced exactly the same problem in windows 2000. For anyone interested: there is an easy workaround available bij using the utility "Raise my rights". This utility makes it possible to produce shortcuts which run a certain program as an administrator even when you are logged in as a user with limited rights. This also works for speedfan (I saved such a shorcut in my startup folder).
