Summary0000741: Zero temperature reading for SATA harddisk under heavy (harddisk) load
DescriptionHi,

I've a system with motherboard Abit AN7 (Sata Sil 3112A Controller)
and a Samsung HD501LJ 500GB HDD. Under heavy hardisk load I get
zero temperature readings for the mentioned harddisk, while with idle
harddisk the readings are OK. Also, this behavior is independent on
CPU load.

I've written a small test program to probe the S.M.A.R.T. and under
heavy harddisk load a call to DeviceIOControl will often return an
error, however if retried several times, it will eventually return
without error - with this approach it was possible to read the
harddisk temperature even under heavy load, although it took longer
to update.
I don't know if there is a better approach, but a quick fix is to
implement an option to retry on unsuccessful DeviceIOControl calls...

I think this issue is related to issues 0000123 and 0000515, I've
also send an report from speedfan.

I hope you can help to sort this out, thanx a lot!

Regards
Bajo

Steps To ReproduceYou have to put the HDD under heavy load.

Interesting. Is the temperature properly reported when hard disk load decreases?

Yes, it will be updated when the load decreases, sometimes even during heavy load... how many successful DeviceIOControl calls are required for HDD temperature update ? Will speedfan display zero temperature if any of the call(s) fails ?
