Summary0000058: Error message during "initial CPU read" - report to follow
DescriptionThis Asus P4P800E-Deluxe has a ICH5R Southbridge, Winbond 'THF' SuperIO chip, reads everything correctly at the boot-up, but doesn't "follow" CPU speed changes, etc.
Steps To ReproduceJust boot and change the CPU speed. The display I get shows the BIOS speed setting, but never changes. Everything else works fine - all three fans, CPU & mobo temp, temps from both hard-drivers.
Additional InformationI sure would like to see the X800XT (and Pro w/VIVO) cards - ATi-based cards that are capable - how can I help?

Sorry - I forgot to note: "MBM" does the same thing: it reads the initial speed correctly, but doesn't 'follow' changes. I've noticed using CrystalCPUID that if I read the speed using the standard low-level routines, I get the 'right' number, but if I tell it to use DMI, I get the original boot speed.

"WebTemp" is just a handy on-screen display, and only reads values from Speedfan (or MBM), but - if you tell it to display "Realtime" speed, it shows the wrong (original) speed, also.

I'm not sure what you're exactly talking about. Do you mean that the COMPUTED MHZs on the CLOCK tab are not updated regularly? If so, then it's by design, as that's not (yet) intended to be a "monitor". It's only updated when SpeedFan has just changed the FSB.
I might consider updating that label every x seconds, but I think I should create a separate thread to do that without interfering with the main one.

If you are talking about the inability to read CPU USAGE on the main window, then drop me an email and I will send to you the latest beta.

It *is* an error on reading the CPU speed at start-up. I thought I sent the exact message it displays back to you by e-mail, but - maybe not. Could you send me the latest version beta to try?

I just sent to you the latest beta. Did you receive it?

I am getting this error -
!!!Exception in reading CPU INFO at startup (2)!!!
With my ASUS P4P800, is this the same problem?

Note to "DataBitz" - yes, exact same message I get during startup. Are you using a "version 2.0" P4P800 or other P4P800-based board? (like the newer "SE" or "E-Deluxe"?) These use a newer version of the clock chip marked "Ultra"...

Sorry, Alfredo - yes, I did try the new beta, but still get the same result: I sent a "REPORT" using the built-in tool.

Well... it was not easy to understand what you actually meant. Now I got the point. I will try some new code and get back to you with a new beta asap :-)

Sorry didn't realise there were so many P4P800's. Mine has the 856PE chipset so I assume its one of the newer models, SE/E-Deluxe.

This is pretty strange: it no longer reports the error at startup, but it doesn't display the CPU speed, either. I'm trying to unload "MBM" so I'm not having more than one monitor running at one time, which - as you noted - can cause problems (and MBM is 'dead', anyway!).

I just uploaded my new temps and as you can see - it's really cool once you play around with SpeedFan and get everything 'just right'! Cool is the "name of the game"...

I still get that "Report this!" message on startup when it sees the second monitor chip, though. I don't have that machine here at the office (it's at home), but you should have two "REPORT" generated messages that show the exact wording. It's not the Winbond "THF" chip - it's the second one it finds.

By the way: any way we can figure out how to get ATi-based temp reports? I'd be more than willing to help any way I can - I know you don't have the hardware there, but I've seen other tools that can read it (like "RivaTuner" which works with both ATi and nVidia cards...). I'm not too familiar with the world of temp and speed sensors, but I've got enough background to be able to help if you point me in the 'right' direction.

Ooops... I was waiting for the SEND REPORT. Could you send it to me?

Basically I added some new code to detect the CPU.
I'm slightly confused about what's working and what's not as you mixed several things in your messages :-)
First: is your CPU properly identified? You can see this in the SEND REPORT.
Second: when you talk about CPU SPEED are you talking about the CLOCK tab, next to the "Computed" label? Can you read nothing there, or is that speed never updated?
Third: if you're talking about the W83791D then I still need to find a good datasheet for it :-)

Version 4.15 fixes the "Exception" issue and properly identifies the CPU.
