Summary0000494: In depth SMART survey may contain misleading lower range values for temperature
DescriptionWhen performing an in-depth SMART survey report, the temperature submitted is not the current one found in SMART, but the one found on the main config page.

This means that if you have not enabled HDx monitoring on the main page, then the temperature submitted is the one found when speedfan first starts, and not the current temperature.

This means that the lowest value submitted to a survey may actually be skewed incorrectly down as users may not monitor HDx as it's normal for a HD to be of a lower temp right after boot.
Steps To ReproduceSubmit SMART survey.

Turn off HDx monitoring.

Wait for temperature to change in SMART.

Submit new survey.
Additional InformationThis has been found to be true on XP with a WD2500KS drive.

I wrote a very long answer here, but a few seconds before posting it I found something in the code that causes exactly the behaviour you pointed out. I'm going to fix the code. Please note that online statistics are recomputed almost every week (I added about 220 new hard disks since when I started this feature) and that the software I wrote to compute them is updated almost every time I use it. Statistics use a different approach to compute the average temperature.

I'm testing the new code. Please, contact me if you wish to test it too. In the meantime I would like to say that the IN-DEPTH ONLINE ANALYSIS facility uses a complex statistical model derived from a large collection of data. While temperatures are considered too, the most important data is about the single attributes. Going back to temperatures, hard disk temperatures from SpeedFan users can be returned using the SEND REPORT and the IN-DEPTH facility. While this makes no difference for all other S.M.A.R.T. attributes, reported temperatures can be different depending on your computer usage, on ambient temperature and on when you ran SpeedFan (at boot or not). The online tool lets you know which were the temperatures reported by SpeedFan's users.
