Summary0000463: Can not change speed of ChipSet Fan on A8N-SLI Premium
DescriptionHi, i have an Asus A8N-SLI Premium board and can not controll the speed (pwr) of the Chip Fan. When i enable the Q-Fan option in the BIOS or with the AI-Booster this Fan stops, then i can not see any speed in SF. Using Q-Fan option shows that this Fan can be controlled, why not by SF 4.27 or 4.28 beta 11?

Make sure all PWM MODEs in CONFIGURE / ADVANCED are set to SOFTWARE CONTROLLED. Then, on the main window, set SPEEDs to 0% and check what happens to fans. It might even be that Asus is using a custom (undocumented) way to stop that fan.

No Way to controll the CHIP_FAN. I tried all options under Configure/Advanced but i can not stop this fan.

you can't control the chip-fan but the CPU and chassis-fan on a8n-mobos..

I have been playing around with this and found that the chipset fan IS controlled BUT I do not get a reading for the 'rpm'
ALSO _BEWARE_ the chipset heatsink was found to be to hot to touch therefore I guess around 60-70 celsius but only reading 35. this is also the reading with 'PCprobeII' software supplied with the mobo [or off asus website] as a result I went into the config> advanced> IT8712F at $290 on ISA> and changed 'Temperature 2 offset to 30 [was '0'] this added 30 degrees to the temp. A _WILD_ guess but seems safer for now. ##IF you have one of these and a temp guage that can read the temp of the heatsink then PLEASE DO IT! for the benifit of others here, thanks

I will continue to try and improve this and put more results here as you should...

The reason the temp is not as high as the actual chipset, is because the sensor itself is not located in the chip, but nearby.

The chipset fan is somehow linked to the CPU-fan on most A8N-boards, i think thats why we cant control it with the current SF.

My original fan the 'bad one' worked for about 6 weeks before dying a noisy death.
so I did a temporary job by unscrewing the fan and removing it, then replaced it with a small cpu cooler fan by screwing it into the top of the heatsink. it was plugged into the same 3 pin socket. this cheap fan was a little noisy but i WAS ABLE TO CONTROL the speed using SF. got no reading for RPM though.

Today I put the ASUS supplied replacement into the chipset socket and found that SF does read RPM but cannot adjust the fan speed at all.
maybe it is the type of fan? anyone got a suggestion?
## A little note if you have one of these and need to remove the old one... use a nailclipper to get the plastic lugs off -work really well...
