Summary | 0002619: Fan speed will change automatically on CPU temp threshold, but not on GPU temp threshold
Description | Fan speed will change automatically on CPU temp threshold, starting up my fans as I have configured it. Since upgrading to 4.44 it will also show my nVidia GT430's temperature (GPU through PCI bus and Core through NVCPL bus) which I'm very pleased with, but strangely it will not automatically start up my fans if the GPU temp exceeds its threshold. As it is a passive graphics card it need the motherboard attached fans to cool it so this would be very nice to have.
Steps To Reproduce | Start speedfan. Start BOINC which 100% loads GPU. Watch GPU temp exceed desired and warning thresholds, but no automatic speed up of fans even though checked.
Additional Information | I just noticed that this motherboard is (no longer) on the supported list, although I can assure you that it can automatically regulate at least 2 fan headers, although not variably, only on or off.

You didn't properly configure the automatic fan control. The help file explains how to do it. On http://www.almico.com/sfarticle.php?id=5 you can find how to configure Advanced Fan Control. P.S.: no motherboard is removed from the list of supported motherboards. If you give me an official english URL for your motherboard, I will be glad to add it to the list. P.P.S.: you say that you can change fan speeds only ON and OFF. This is unusual. In the help file there is a section about Advanced Options. Did you have a look at it? |
|
> You didn't properly configure the automatic fan control. Thank you, configuring through Advanced Fan Control now allows me to automatically adjust fan speed on GPU temp. I have to say I think it is logical to expect the fan speed to vary on the GPU warning temp you set in the Temperatures tab, just as it does for the CPU and other temperature sensors. P.S.: http://www.msi.com/product/server/K7D-Master-Series.html P.P.S.: I'm sorry but I can't find the help file... I will now upload a screenshot, do you mean these options? It's only sensor Pwm2 on Winbond W83627HF that can vary 2 fan headers from 0 to 12V with nothing in between. |

The meaning of WARNING levels is the same for every temperature: if configured, SpeedFan will set fan speeds to 100% if those levels are reached or exceeded. The help file can be opened using the F1 key or through the START menu. |
|
I looked at the screenshot you uploaded and noticed that PWM MODE is not an available option. I will check the source code. |
|
I looked at the datasheet and the W83627HF has PWM control always enabled. If you can control the fan speed only in an ON/OFF fashion, try to change PWMOUT CLOCK, otherwise you should contact MSI to know if that behaviour is by hardware design. |

> The meaning of WARNING levels is the same for every temperature: if configured, SpeedFan will set fan speeds to 100% if those levels are reached or exceeded. Aha, now we have really found a bug! On my setup speedfan 4.44 will only set fan speeds to 100% if GPU exceeds WARNING level AND Advanced fan control is checked. Without touching Advanced fan control then fans will only be set to 100% on WARNING levels for CPU etc, but not for GPU!!! > If you can control the fan speed only in an ON/OFF fashion, try to change PWMOUT CLOCK Thanks for the help, I tried changing PWNOUT but it was still just ON/OFF. I couldn't find a setting for 3M as the help states. But it doesn't matter so much for me ON/OFF is fine, I just was these fans to run 100% whenever the GPU gets too hot, which is mainly at night. |

I don't think there is any bug. If you disable Advanced Fan Control, but Automatic Fan Speed is enabled, SpeedFan reverts back to the old fan control strategy. Most likely you didn't tie GPU temperature readings to any SPEED that SpeedFan is allowed to change. |
|
> Most likely you didn't tie GPU temperature readings to any SPEED that SpeedFan is allowed to change. You are right, I'm sorry. I hadn't used Speedfan in a while and I forgot you also had to expand the GPU temperature setting and check the right fan speed. I will now make a donation for your excellent product (although IMHO it could do with a GUI redesign) and support. |
|
I agree that all the features that SpeedFan has might require an easier to use UI. I am working to refactor the source code. |
