Summary0001679: S.M.A.R.T. monitoring cannot see a disk on AMD SATA interface in AHCI mode
DescriptionI have just installed SpeedFan on a newly built core system with-

Asus M4A88T-M/USB3 motherboard
AMD Phenom II 1055T CPU
Samsung F3 1TB disk
Windows Xp Sp3

I installed the (single) disk in AHCI mode.

Speedfan cannot see the disk in the machine at all, on the SMART tab the pulldown "Hard disk" menu is empty.
Steps To ReproduceInstalling Speedfan on any AHCI disk might cause this issue, or it could be specific to the AMD 880G Chipset SATA/AHCI drivers.

Do other programs show SMART information with this setup?
Have you tried IDE mode?
Does the problem occur when you use the msahci driver instead of the AMD AHCI driver?

This PC is set up to dual-boot Windows 7 and Windows XP SP3.

Earlier today I installed Speedafn 4.41 on Win 7. I also had reason to turn off User Account Control (UAC) on the machine and then turn it back on again.

After I had done so I found Speedfan could now see my disk (in Win 7). I need to go back to Win XP and install 4.41 to see if this alone is enough to fix the problem.

I can confirm that 4.42 running under Win XP SP3 cannot see the disk data on this machine (the SMART tab is not even displayed).

By comparison on the same machine under Win 7 4.41 CAN see the disk, as long as the program is run with admin privileges (to override UAC).

As far as I can see, RUN AS ADMIN was the reason for this issue.
