Summary0001637: No more fan speeds on Intel DG45ID since 4.41
DescriptionSince the new version 4.41 (final) speedfan does not detect anymore the Intel QST. This causes that speedfan does not show any fan speeds at all. In version 4.40 (final) speedfan could read them and also detected the Intel QST on startup.

If you need any further info then let me know.

I have new Intel DH57JG motherboard with QST,
OS is Windows 7 x64.

If I am running Speedfan 4.41 normally, it does not detect any fans or speeds.

If I run it with "run as administrator", it sees the QST and fans and I can control the fans. However, Speedfan does not rush them to 100% at startup like it used to do with my previous PC.

Dues to that, the only practical way to start Speedfan is to create a task through task manager, which is a bit cumbersome.

(I needed also to go to the "maintenance menu" of BIOS through settings a jumper, and it enabled the BIOS option to "allow software access to QST". So, the access to QST might be difficult to achieve)

The "allow software access to QST" in BIOS is logical on Intel Boards, without this option the mainboard blocks any write access to the QST. But write access is necessary to control fan speeds.

Anyway, to read fan speeds it is not.

My reported issue above is a Windows XP SP3 system, so it has full admin rights. And as I reported with Speedfan 4.39 I can read the fan speed.

Also I can report from two other machines that I cannot read fan speeds anymore with Speedfan 4.41:

On Windows 7 64 bit with Intel DP35DP I have the same issue as reported above, with Speedfan 4.39 I can read the fan speed, with 4.41 not at all. If I start Speedfan with administrator privileges, I can at least read the HDD temp. Without administrator privileges I can not.

On Windows 7 64 bit with Intel GM45/ICH9-M chipset in a laptop (Averatec 2700) I also got the same error, no more fan speed after update from 4.39 to 4.41...

The first things I need are:
- DEBUG.NFO from SpeedFan's directory
- a SEND REPORT (INFO tab)
It would be great if you could send the report directly from SpeedFan and if you could send me DEBUG.NFO as a txt attachment.
Thank you.

Did you RUN AS ADMIN on the Averatec? Are you sure that it has QST? I would like to see a SEND REPORT from 4.39 too.
But let me focus on the Intel DG45ID. On that board you have XP SP3 and you saw that SpeedFan 4.39 worked fine with QST while 4.41 doesn't. The problem is that SpeedFan 4.39 supported Intel QST 1.x. That was the only known version of QST. Recently, Intel QST 2.x was released. Several things have changed in the interface and I had to identify what version was installed on the system. Your DG45ID returns "HECI version 6.0.0.1179". AFAIK, version 6 is QST 2.x, while version up to, and including, 5 were QST 1.x.

Bad Joker, the same goes for the DP35DP.

Hello alfredo,

the Averatec maybe has no QST at all, the BIOS is really basic. I will test it with 4.39, if you give me an link very I can download the old version.

Regarding the HECI driver I can tell you why my systems runs on it with version 6.0.0.1179:

I'm uing an inf modded driver of the 6.x HECI driver which also supports the Intel QST 1 Boards. For the DP35DP board for example Intel offers only an outdated 3.x HECI driver and for the DG45ID also just an old 4.x HECI driver.

This shouldn't be a problem to read QST 1, because Speedfan worked with the same driver before, I did not changed it at all. But I understand if Speedfan cannot idetify QST 1 when he does it by checking the HECI driver version.

So should I try to use the original "old" driver and test it with it?

I just mailed 4.39 to you. Let me know if you got it.

Hello alfredo,

I installed 4.39 on the Averatec 2700 Laptop and you are right, it has no QST at all and I was mistaken also with 4.39 it does not report the fan speed. I mixed it up with my netbook, were I can read the fan speed (but also can with 4.41).

So how to deal with the two other mainboards? Should I try the older HECI drivers with 4.41?

The older driver would do the trick.

Just send the new report from Intel DP35DP mainboard with installed HECI 3.x driver. Now I see much more temperatures (CPU die, ICH, MCH, Motherboard) and I can control the CPU fan smoothly. But the speed of the fan is still not reported.

Also just to tell you: HECI 3.x driver officially does not support Windows 7, so I will create a new inf modded HECI 5.x driver and test this one.

Any idea about the fan speed? Attached you will find the debug.nfo from this report.

QST reports no fan is monitored on your system (config.FanMons=$00).

OK, now I reported just again with the inf modded HECI 5.x driver again from Intel DP35DP, same situation as reported above, still no fan speeds, but Speedfan recognizes Intel QST 1.x.

Also attached the new debug.nfo.

Hey alfredo, you are just GREAT!!!

After the last BIOS update I forgot to let the BIOS to detect the fan. Just did it (inside the BIOS) and now I also can see the fan speed again.

So i guess this issue is resolved, you just did again great work with the 4.41 version, now I also can control the fanspeed diretly from Speedfan.

And all just caused by the damn HECI driver :)

If anybody needs the inf modded HECI 5.x driver, you can download it here:
http://home.arcor.de/badjoker/MEI_5.2.20.1030.exe

It should work with P35/Q35/G35 and P45/Q45/G45 chipsets. Also it supports Windows 2000 again (if needed) and most important it works with Windows 7.
