Summary0001535: No fans listed
DescriptionThis morning my laptop started much quieter than usual and I was wondering if the fans stopped working. So I downloaded and installed SpeedFan and it reports no fans.

The temperatures reported on machine startup are:

Temp 113F 46C
FDD 95F 36C
Temp1 125F 49C
Core 118F 48C

Intermittently the Core Temp gord to 50C and gets flagged red.

Aren't these too high for startup?

I see that 4.4 is beta and I see that there is an open "No fans reported" bug on a Gateway computer.

How can I tell whether no fans is due to them not working, or a bug which needs fixing?

Thanks.

Do other programs like Everest show the fan speed? If not, the custom mainboard/BIOS probably doesn't allow to read the fan speed.

Are the temperatures reported normal? They are frequently flagged in red.
Also, the system is unusually quiet.

The whole point of the post is to find out if (a) the system does not allow the fans to be monitored (b) speedfan has a problem (c) the fans don't work.

I want to know for sure.

You have to configure Speedfan to your system. Your temperatures look okay. You can go into the configure tab and raise the alert level for each temperature. Contact the maker of your laptop and ask them what temperatures are normal or do a search on the web for your laptop temperatures and see what you find.

Your mobo may not have the required sensor chip to allow fan monitoring. Download the trial version of Everest Ultimate and see if it will pick up the fans. If it will not then contact the maker of your laptop and ask them if the mobo includes a sensor chip that will supply fan information. If it does get the chip type and report back. Or again do a web search for your laptop and fan speed and see what shows up.

Thank you.

I found out that the max temp is 100C.

I downloaded and installed Everest and generated a hardware report. Is this the right report for the sensor chip and what should I be looking for to figure out whether the laptop has a sensor?

Also, what is the Temp1 value that SpeedFan is displaying -- what temp does it measure?

In Everest on the left side of the screen you should have a list, something like:
Computer
Motherboard
Operating System
ect.

Left click on Computer and on the right of the screen you should have more choices and one of those is Sensor. Left click on sensor and if the laptop has a sensor chip then it should display temperature, fan and voltage information.

Does it display this?

Regarding "Temp1" Speedfan just assigns a name that may or may not have anything to do with what the actual temperature reading is from. Everest tends to have better descriptions. You can also download RealTemp, CoreTemp and HWMontior. Compare the description in each with the temperatures in each and you may be able to figure out what "Temp1" actually is.

Everest shows the sensor and temperatures, but not any fan speed -- should it show in the same section?

Sensor Properties:
Sensor Type National LM63-compatible (SMBus 4Ch)

    Temperatures:
      Motherboard 44

The fan RPM information in Everest is on the same page as the temperature information.

On the top right of Speedfan there is a configuration tab. You can go into that tab, then go to the temperature tab and from there select a temperature then on the bottom you can raise the alert level so you do not have red flame tags. All of this is explained with the manual that comes with Speedfan, I really suggest that you read it if you plan on using and configuring Speedfan for your PC.

I Googled GMCH1 and that is your Graphis Memory & Control Hub. You can Google WDC WD2500BEVT-75ZCT2 and Hitachi HDP725025GLA380 and then you should be able to figure out what those temps are even though the trial version will not display them. CPU1 Core1 and CPU1 Core0000002 are your two core temps.

Download HWMonitor
http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitorpro.php
The download link is at the bottom of the page, see if that will pick up your fan(s). Since it is a trial version you may have to start it, stop it, start it, stop it, three or four times for it to pick up the fan RPM and not display trial.

If neither Everest Ultimate or HWMonitor will pick up your fans then either your sensor chip is not sending the information or your fans are inop.

There maybe more fan utilities around, but those two and Speedfan are the three that I know about.

Well, I contacted Gateway to find out about fan speed.
Their support people are completely ignorant. Here is what they replied:

Thank you for contacting Gateway. I

HWMonitor does not report any fan speed.

So the question is how can I find out if the fan is inop?

The temps seem to be OK, but it may be due to the cooler when it works.

I am out of recommendations other than googling gateway support forums, pick one of the many computer support forums that show up, register with one and ask.

You can also try joining the Gateway user group on Yahoo.

I'll try the gateway support.

Would the cooler also affect the core temp?

This morning the system started as follows:

Temp 20C
HD0 22C
Temp149C
Core 36C

And shortly after that, say 10-15mins it was: 43, 31,47 and 37 and more or less stable there. With the cooler on.

I'm afraid that fan speeds are not accessible on your hardware.
