I just sent him an email. My problem is that I already wrote the code to do it, but that it doesn't work on XP SP2. Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon configuration and, what makes things worse, on some SP2 it might work, but I can't know for sure... |

Thanks u-man to show us this great tools that is silentdrive. I activate the AAM on all my drive and it's less noisy now as never. But there is a 'little issue' (if we can call it issue) : I use a nForce2 mobo, and i decide to install the NVidia ATA/IDE driver, and with this driver loaded, silentdrive (as Alfredo's beta program sfsilencetest) doesn't see any of my drive, and so can't act on the AAM feature. Not really an issue but a limitation as you should use an Microsoft ATA driver API Call. |

The Hitachi feature tool which sets AAM can only be run under DOS, not XP. I believe Hitachi would have created an XP version if it was possible and safe to do so. Western Digital has pulled AAM modifying utilities from their public servers, although they still ship drives to OEM with the AAM feature set (for TIVOs for example), they must be using an AAM utility internally to set this bit. Rumors are they pulled the utility from the public over patent issues, but who knows what is going on. I used the Hitachi feature tool sucesssfully on my WD drive, from DOS of course. http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/download.htm |

Well I'm obviously wrong because here is an XP tool to modify AAM setting: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Doc%C2%B4s_AAM_Tool_d3945.html |

My guess is that for current hard disk drives, AAM does not help much. On my SP1614C the noise reduction achieved by AAM during seeking is barely noticeable. It is more effective to acoustically isolate the HDD from the computer case. For example, if your machine is never moved, simply lay the HDD on a sheet of soft foam. Much better. |

@flachschippe: Yes you are right. For the current HDs, AAM does not help much. But there are many old but in performance good HDs, except the noise that they are making, like my IBM 72GB Bla Bla Model. Using AAM on these drives, makes a difference like day and night. Just read the other comments here. So why should not Speedfan support these HDs with some little and nice silence commands ?? If I could programm something, I would do this immediatelly. I dont understand why Alfredo isnt featuring this. For the older PCs, this would be a real silence maker. Such a combination would Speedfan make a really, really attractive APP for all the "silence" modders outthere (even if its now a good silence modder). I now own a G5 Apple 2,0Ghz Dual processor PC and that is silence, dude. And this, with no watercooling at all. But in comparison to my 3,4 Single Pentium 4 PC, they are nearly equal, speaking in therms of performance and Speed. I spend 1000 |
