Summary0000143: Nice Feature for S.M.A.R.T Technology
DescriptionHello Alfredo, I am not a programmer, but maybe its not to hard to make this work. I like the S.M.A.R.T. feature in Speedfan, but I am really missing the accoustic management of the S.M.A.R.T. technology. There is a freeware app from a german guy under the following link: http://www.rt-sw.de/freeware/en_bfreeware.html its called Silentdrive and it uses accoustic management. If I use Speedfan and silentdrive together, my PC gets more than 50% quietter. It would be so nice to see these feature implemented in Speedfan. Anyway I like speedfan very much, as it make my work so nice and quiet ;-P If you need some help, I can only translate german<>english stuff. My e-mail is: u-man@arcor.de O.k. thats all, greetz u-man

I'm thinking about it, but I must be sure whenever I do apply any change to SpeedFan because there are so many users out there and I can't mess their HDDs up by using some non-standard feature. I still have to figure out how much a standard AAM is :-)

Hello again,

1st. I can understand that you want to be sure, before implementing AAM, because of the reasons you mentioned earlier ;-P

2nd. AAM is NOT a non-standard feature. There are a view appz outthere, wich do the same like silentdrive. Most of them are from the common manufacturers of HDDs (IBM/Hitachi, Maxtor etc.). I am sure that they use all the same technology.

3rd. and last. I am trying to get as much info from the author of "silentdrive", regarding the problem of compatibility of different HDDs under AAM. Since this programm exist for years, I am sure he has some reliable information for you about compatibility. If you want, I will try to establish a cooperation between the author of silentdrive and off course YOU ;-)

Hope it sounds interesting for you.

I have investigated and found the relevant specifications. I fixed an error in SpeedFan that existed ever since. Basically SpeedFan was checking AAM support on the wrong bit. This is an issue that causes absolutely no harm, but it makes all the reports I collected on AAM unuseful.
The main problem, now, is that Windows XP is not working when attempting to send IDE COMMANDs to the hard disk. I tried a lot and managed to talk to the hard disk under Windows 2000, but not under Windows XP.
This means that the real problem is to know how to send the relevant command to the Hard Disk. The tool you suggested is not working on my Windows XP SP2...
