@Alfredo
Here are a few things I noticed:

1) I like this feature :). Especially that the CPU utilization is displayed seperately for both cores.

2) If the descriptions of sensors or fans are too long, they are cut off. Maybe you can add a line break or make the size of the fields adjustable...something like that.

3) Battery doesn't need to be shown when there is none (Desktop systems)

4) For a better layout it could be useful to insert headlines or some space between the categories (temps, fans, cpu, voltages)

That's it for now.

PS: Have you made any changes in beta 21?

It's an absolutely senseless feature.
Usefull options like fan speed NOT at 100% on startup for example are again missing...

only a few ones...

@norman02us
Beta 21, most notably, includes some fixes, adds full support for nVidia MCP73 SMBus and shows FB-DIMM temperatures.

@gseeder
If properly configured, SpeedFan lowers fan speeds as soon as possible.
I'm sorry that you find useless the Exotics tab, but it seems to be useful to some other users. I'll keep on doing my best to satisfy as many users as possible, including you.

@Alfredo

I actually meant changes regarding this new feature, but it doesn't look like anything has changed.

@alfredo
I can not hear this sentence any more: "If properly configured, SpeedFan lowers fan speeds as soon as possible." I know how speedfan works!
WHEN you make changes, why not the option "to start with some specific fan speeds" as suggested by you?!

So PLEASE add this feature.

@gseeder
I'm going to add this option. The reason why I didn't add it is that it is useful only on boot and on resume. In both cases, the CPU is heavily loaded and to lower fan speeds is not, IMHO, the best option. If, on the other side, your computer runs confortably with fans set to a specific level, then you can already set MAX SPEED to that value and it will be applied on boot and on resume too.

@gseeder
Please, send me an email using an account where you can receive a zipped exe (this means: NOT gmail). I'm writing a beta to try to fit your needs. Would you like if SpeedFan, on resume, set all fan speeds to 100% for half a second and then slow them to their minimum value? The initial speed up is needed if any fan doesn't start when set to its minimum speed while stopped.

Isn't it better to make Speedfan check the temps first and then set temperatures according to the the settings?

That way Speedfan could start with low rpms and in case of high cpu temps it would prevent overheating.

@norman02us
Well... that's what would happen. At present I start with fast fans and try to slow down. Some people seem to prefer the other way, so this is what I implemented. I just need some feedback on the new strategy.
In the meantime I'm working hard to improve EXOTICS. At present I should have been able to update that tab after configuration changes.

I meant what norman02us said.
But it seems that it is impossible? Sorry but my english is not so good that i understand exactly what it means "The initial speed up is needed if any fan doesn't start when set to its minimum speed while stopped."

PS: if somebody has a gmail acc just rename the file extension .exe or .zip into another one like ".old"

I think Alfredo means that some fans will not start with less than 50% (just an example) because they might need a higher voltage. That's why Speedfan starts with 100% or the maximum value to make sure that all fans run, and then voltage/speed is reduced.

@edit
That's why he suggested to start the fan with full speed and then set the lowest speed after half a second. This way, the fan will definitely start.

You have beta :-)

@gseeder
By the way: extension renaming is not enough. I should use RAR, or 7ZIP, but I can't use a different compressor for every user :-)

@alfredo
I thought a little bit about your argument of fans not starting, and I couldn't think of a situation where that might occur because the BIOS is always starting the fans before Speedfan even starts.
So I believe that setting the fan speeds immediately according to the indiviual configuration would be safe.

What do you think?

@norman02us
It's very easy to remove the initial 100%. Would you like to try the latest beta?

norman02us

2008-07-30 08:44

reporter   ~0003885

I would try it, but it wouldn't make a difference because on Asus Boards Q-Fan has to be disabled in the BIOS to get control with Speedfan. So all fans are set to 100% anyway before Speedfan starts.

@norman02us
I thought that changing PWM MODE in CONFIGURE / ADVANCED was enough to override Q-FAN. Anyway: the latest beta would slow down fans much sooner than before (in about a second, I think).

As far as I know from several Asus boards, Q-Fan has to be disabled to get Speedfan to work. It would be great if Speedfan could override Q-Fan.

Great improvement :)

I have to report a bug ...
SpeedFan shows wrong processor speed on my notebook.
The frequency should be between 798MHz and 1,86GHz ...
SpeedFan reports 100MHz, 900MHz ... this is very strange :D :D
(it seems like random data :D :D)

It looks like a ten year old program called MBM. Hardly groundbreaking, isn't it?

@z_o_o_m007
The method used to compute that reported frequency can lead to wrong values on processors where the time stamp counter can't be used as a safe source of clock.

@msalvagno
I think something similar whenever I look at a word processor. It looks like ten years old word processors :-) I wrote the EXOTICS tab years ago, but never finished it. Now people need to see all of the readings that SpeedFan can access. Luckily, SpeedFan can access a lot of them. I tried to find an alternate way to show all of them. A TreeView doesn't seem to fit the task. If you have any suggestion, I will be glad to know it as I plan a major UI rewrite and I would like to create one that fulfills modern needs.

Will Speedfan get the Vista style?

Consider that SpeedFan can run on Windows 98. There are not many tools that can do that.

I don't understand the relationship between your answer and my question.

You said that you are rewriting the UI and I was wondering if that includes design changes to make it look more like Vista.

Sorry. There are things that, if used, might break compatibility with older Windows versions.

well, as i suggested before. If you redesign anyway try to make the readings displays separate units. ASUS PCProbe is a nice example. It has a crappy interface and is pretty useless, but they have these little containers which show as pcprobe runs in the tray. Way easier to do then make the objects dockable to desktop. They have a magnet symbol by which you can group them.
What i dont like about them is that they are to much in your face. The container has a wide outline, ugly colour.
see screenshot
But something like this, with a tiny little outline, configurable colour/font.

The exotics tab looks good. It gives a nice overview of the different readings at one glance.

How about showing different icons in the tray also? I hope you are working on it:)

still i am wrestling with SMART tabs, i have 4 drives.The tabs show HD0 90%,HD1 94%,HD2 94%,HD3 90%.
SMART http://www.hddstatus.com/hdrepanalysis.php gives me:
HD0: The overall fitness for this drive is 90%.
The overall performance for this drive is 90%.
HD1: The overall fitness for this drive is 97%.
The overall performance for this drive is 100%.
HD2: The overall fitness for this drive is 99%.
The overall performance for this drive is 100%
HD3: The overall fitness for this drive is 53%.
The overall performance for this drive is 87%.

as the 1st 3 drives are less then a year old seems ok, as HD3 is 5 years old that seems reasonable.
but what do the tabs in exotics mean then?
