Summary0000851: How to make sense out of new K8 core temp
DescriptionNow that Speed Fan is reporting K8 core temps on AMD64 processors, what are we to make of them? In the past we got the CPU temp from the BIOS, but this new core temp is supposed to be direct from the CPU. I can't find clear guidelines on temperature as was simply stated for the old Athlon xp processors. So like many others I have determined my Tcase max temp (mine is 57c)verifying with several programs. Now my "core" temp is hovering around 51c while BIOS is reporting 41c am I close to the max (57c), or well within limits? I used to think how great my temp readings were until this new sensor came along. I wish AMD gave clear, simple & specific guidelines on temp. This has been on my mind for a while. Thanks in advance.

The K8 Core temperature is read directly from the THERMTRIP register used for internal CPU thermal management and is what I believe AMD would call Tcontrol. If you look at Pg 40 of the current BIOS & Kernel Developer's Guide (32559.pdf) you'll see a rough graph illustrating expected relationship between Tcontrol and Tcase - note that Tcase starts higher and ends up lower than Tcontrol.

Of course both temps come from separate on-CPU thermal diodes so the one you see through the hardware monitor chip is not really a Tcase but it's possible that the mbrd mfr has calibrated things so that it's closer to Tcase than Tcontrol. The behavior I've observed is that that's *maybe* how it works: the K8 Core temp is lower at idle but higher under load. What I did was to check both readings at idle, with Cool n Quiet enabled, and then adjust the K8 Core offset in the Advanced Configure tab of Speedfan so that it read 2-3 degrees lower than the "CPU Temp" read through the hardware monitor chip.

Thank you Laird. This helps clear up the confusion. I'll check out that publication.
