| Steps To Reproduce | * If I leave it running, my secondary hard drives spin, day after day (I never shut my system down). * Closing all other applications (besides SpeedFan) does not change anything. * If I close SpeedFan, the drives enter sleep mode as configured in the power management settings. | ||||
| Additional Information | Of course I do not expect my primary (i.e. Windows) hard drive to enter sleep mode. I am talking about secondary hard drives, which are not in use, yet still will not enter sleep mode. The drives in question do not have page files on them, and are not subject to any file system activity at all. I've tried using Sysinternals Filemon to see what's going on, but it shows nothing. | ||||

Only very few users reported this issue. There must be some specific setting with specific drives preventing them from entering low power modes. SpeedFan is quite clever when accessing S.M.A.R.T. data and I see no reason why the HDD should not enter sleep mode, as S.M.A.R.T. data needs not to be stored on the HD, but in an internal buffer. Anyway: the fix, as you suggest, is to completely disable SpeedFan's support for S.M.A.R.T. monitoring. Please, use the following command line switch: /NOSMARTSCAN |
