Summary0000707: Fan configuration
DescriptionI am trying to figure out how many fans I have and what settings they should have in SpeedFan. Any help would be much appreciated.

SpeedFan shows 3 fans but only the first one (which is labelled by EasyTune as CPU shows rpm). The other 2 stay on 0. EasyTune lists another fan labelled as system which shows 0rpm under EasyTune but there is no listing for a third fan. In SpeedFan under configure on the speeds tab it shows 3 speeds. Does that mean I have 3 fans? If I alter speed 1 or 3 I can hear the fans changing speeds but if I alter speed 2 I don't hear anything at all. Speed 1 and 3 could be changing the speed of the same fan for all I know though. Under Configure on the advanced tab, PWM mode was set to software controlled for fan 1, ON/OFF for fan 2 and smart guardian for fan 3. I changed this so all of them are set to software controlled in order to let SpeedFan control the speeds. I don't know whether I should leave fan 2 set to ON/OFF or not though. Are there some fans that should always be running? I would think fan 1 and 3 should be but maybe fan 2 only needs to come on at certain times? Also is there a speed that a particular fan, say for example the Power supply fan should never run lower than?

Also, in the BIOS, smart fan is enabled. Since SpeedFan seems to working ok despite this, I left this setting alone. In the BIOS there is a setting that can be ticked to sound an alarm if the fans aren't spinning. When I enabled this setting the alarm went off, presumably reacting to whatever fans being reported as 0rpm. However my temps are not in danger so I'm confused. If a fan wasn't working then wouldn't that be reflected by high temps?

I monitor 2 temperatures with SpeedFan, CPU and hard disk. I have SpeedFan set to a desired temp of 35C and a warning temp of 40C for CPU and hard disk. This is probably a rather low setting but I thought while I was figuring stuff out it was best to be careful.

Forgot to mention, in regards to the fan speed showing as 0rpm for Fan 2 and 3, I have tried altering the fan divisor as described in the help file with no change no matter what number I select.

Okay, so I've been running SpeedFan for a few months now. I'm fairly sure speed 2 is useless so I've unticked it. The one fan I can get a rpm reading for seems to be affected by both speeds 1 and 3. If I decrease either of these speeds the rpm of that fan goes down. I thought one speed was supposed to correlate to one fan so I dunno what's going on with that.
