Summary0000623: Fan control does nothing on Toshiba M400
DescriptionSpeedFan detects 3 controlable fans, 2 from the FDC37n972 IO chip and one from the Toshiba fan driver. Changing the fan speed percentage has no effect in any combination. As well under Chipset, "no known chipset detected" is displayed, the Toshiba M400 uses a ICH7-M chipset - which in theory should be compatible with ICH7. Assume that due to the unknown chipset choosing to scan SMBus does nothing.
Steps To ReproduceNo additional steps required, fresh install of XP then installation of SpeedFan produces repeatable effect.
Additional InformationI have also submitted an ACPI scan using the tool you have provided on your web page. Note that the ACPI scan will have sent you identifying information such as specific model revision and serial number.

Any progress? If there's anything I can do to help, let me know. I looked around the forums for the M400 and there seems to be a number of people who are looking for something that could control the fan.

Is there anything that I can do to help. I have the same issue. The other thing that is interesting is that the hard disks don't appear in the SMART monitoring.

I think it's because that the M400 uses a SATA hard drive on a RAID controller that SpeedFan does not report the drive temperature.

Is there anything I can do to help get this feature working? The fan seems to run on 100% even when the laptop is not being used, CPU temperature is around 30 degrees, shouldn't the fan spin down?.

As far as I can tell the M400 has no ACPI fan control. Look for M400 bios version 1.8w The w version has modified fan tables to keep your M400 3-5 degrees warmer but very quiet.

The 1.8W BIOS does keep it quiet, however it is a special BIOS and does not include the fixes in the later releases (current is 3.3).

There are some problems with the 1.8W BIOS with Vista and other operating systems so I must use 3.3 instead which is very loud.

This may not be directly related to SpeedFan, but I am wondering if we can modify the fan tables in the shadow BIOS to get the behavior of 1.8W?

The M400 is an excellent laptop except for the fan sounding like a jet engine at temps where full fan speed isn't needed...

Is there any way to make speedfan compatible with the M400?

As far as I can tell the fan in the M400 is not ACPI controlled as such we probably wont see support for it in Speedfan. I would suggest installing bios 1.8W or 2.1N which have special fan tables with MUCH lower speeds at the cost of a few degrees warmer run time. Google for it, there is some information about it.

Any progress on this bug? Is it still being worked on? Anything I can do to help? SpeedFan is now onto version 4.39 and the issue remains.

The loud fan is killing this otherwise superb laptop.
