Summary0000278: SpeedFan initially did not work, then worked after unsuspend, then did not work again after reboot
DescriptionSpeedFan originally and still detects temps, fans and speeds correctly. I was and am still able to manually change speeds from 0% all the way up to 100% temporarily. After a few seconds the fan speeds revert back to system controlled. SpeedFan did work at one time. I left the computer idle and it went into suspend mode. After unsuspend, the program worked perfectly and continued to work throughout the work session. I shut down the computer and after reboot SpeedFan reverted back to original problems. I have been unable to duplicate suspend fix. Might have been a fluke or I might not have configurations set exactly the same. I did do a Bios upgrade, but only after trying to duplicate suspend fix and failing. I know that this program will do what it is supposed to do, but we need to make it override the system controls.

I was able to recreate suspend fix. Computer has to auto suspend, can not manually suspend system. When system is unsuspended, SpeedFan works perfectly. All fans can be set from 0-100% in manual and auto changes speeds as set in parameters. I know that the system is being seen differently than when booted from off. Is there any way we can recreate this without going through suspend mode. Please let me know what you find out. Would love to test out any betas you have.

My guess is that your BIOS is controlling fan speeds somehow. Perhaps, after a resume from suspend, the BIOS doesn't initialize some bits. When you try to change fan speeds, do you use controls from DELL sensors, or from the LPC47N252?

I think I sent you a new beta. Did you receive it?

Yes I received beta and will send report as requested after reboot and after suspend.

Installed beta and configured. First attempt worked same as previous version. It did not work until after suspend. After rebooting and reloading SpeedFan, could not repeat same results. Tried to recreate suspend fix with beta installed, with no luck. I sent report to you with beta 4 installed. When changing speeds I use LPC47N252. I tried all configurations with Dell sensors, and did not get any control of fans. As far as I can tell the Dell sensors are only used to read the fan speeds. The temps and fan control come from LPC47N252.

Today, restarted SpeedFan with beta 4. Did not reconfigure. Suspend worked and SpeedFan controls fan speeds both manually and automatically. After reboot, speed reverts back to bios control. I sent report first after suspend and control works and then second after reboot and bios controlled fans. Hope this helps you figure out what program is not recognizing or what bios is not re-initializing.

SpeedFan releases control of fans when temp get above 58c. My guess is bios is trying to take over control when temp gets too high. My main problem is fans do not sufficiently keep my laptop cool. I am not overclocking or doing anything out of the ordinary. I have done diagnostics on the fans and they test fine. I have cleaned out the ducts and done everything I can. I understand this is a constant problem with Dell laptops. Your program is the only one that I have found that has been able to at least start to control my fans so that they can at least do something to keep the temp down.

Have you found out anything??? I know you have been busy, but it has been quite a while since I have heard anything from you.

Still hoping you are working on Dell problems. I know you are a busy man. I am not complaining. Just still waiting for a REAL fix for these Dell fans. I have tried I8Kfangui and can keep fans running at full speed in manual mode. But, when temps get high on auto mode or manual, they shut down to almost nothing and temps really start to climb. It seems that bios just does not want to let go of control.

I have been doing further research on my laptop. PLL for Dell Latitude C640 is an ICS chip 950805. Also researching this PLL backwards comes back to an Intel motherboard, not a Dell board. I do not remember what information was sent from configurations so I will list what I know. The chipset is Intel i845D rev. 04, southbridge is Intel 82801CAM (ICH3-M). I have tried controlling FSB and underclocking processor to control high temps, but all of the programs I have found can not control PLL 950805. I have recently found a program that says it can control PLL 9508XX. I have not had a chance to try this one yet. I will let you know what I find. Please acknowledge you are still monitoring old messages. Nothing further is necessary, unless this info I have forwarded helps.
