Summary | 0000261: Speedfan 4.23 works fine, until first reboot, now nothing works anymore.
Description | Hi alfredo, First many thanks for making & supporting this excellent tool. I decided to give it a try last night when my shuttle's fan noise finally drove me to take some measures. I've got a Shuttle 41G2 V2 (motherboard FN41V3.1) Speedfan reports I have an IT8712F, and the fan speed controls worked just fine, after I had switched the fan 1 & fan 3 PWM to software control in the advanced menu. The fan speeds in the Shuttle seem to be quite non-linear, I had the best result at a setting of 1% speed only (around 1000rpm) At 2%, speed already jumped to 1500rpm. So I twiddled around a bit, and changed the PWM frequency setting from 3M downto 0.75M. This makes the resulting frequency lower of the fan, thus allowing for a bit more control (the 2% setting dropped to 1200rpm) I also changed the fan settings. Up until this point, everything works just fine. (Althought the fan speed auto adjust algorithm needs a much lower change speed for a Shuttle than can be selected) Now I decide to reboot. After this, Speedfan starts up but starts reporting SMB errors. The first time after a reboot, it now still sees the IT8712F. The sensors appear in the window, but all values are -1. I can go to the "advanced" settings and I see all the IT8712F settings, but I cannot change them (So I cannot reset the 0.75M setting back to 3M. (nor any other setting) The 2nd time I then try to start Speedfan, it can not even find the temperature sensors anymore. I've tried every command switch I could find, and even gave the beta a try, but nothing works. Can you help me out?

Ok, after some more tweaking & twiddling & reading the forums I found indeed that disabling smb AND a reboot helped, and it is working fine again for me. |

I'm happy to see you found the solution. Anyway: this is something unusual. Most likely, there is something else accessing the SMBus or SMBus settings are unusual. You might try a BIOS upgrade. Unfortunately, I do not have the datasheets for nVidia hardware and this makes it impossible for me to look for unusual values in hardware related options. |
