Summary0000190: Pwm1 don't reach minimum value
DescriptionI have problem with controlling "System fan speed" (Pwm1) speed. Pwm1 is set to this values: maximum = 15%, minimum = 5%, automaticaly variated = ON.

When SpeedFan is loaded Pwm1 is properly set to maximum value of 15%. Then Pwm1 do not fall smoothly to 5% but stops at certain level (15%, 11%, 9%, 7%... it is never the same) and 5% is not reached. I have to set Pwm1 to 5% manualy or restart SpeedFan to fix the problem.

This occurs when the temperatures are deeply under the desired values.

Pwm3 works fine. I don't use Pwm2.

I have enclosed a zipped file with:
 - report and log when the problem occured (failed) - system fan did
   not go under 0000798:0002400 RPM (7%)
 - report and log when the problem did not occured (OK) - system fan
   is at 0000617:0002000 RPM (5%)
 - cfg files
Steps To ReproduceThe problem occurs only sometimes. It occurs ussualy after cold boot (computer was i power-off state before), with propability of about 50%.

This problem occurs only when SpeedFan is started for the first time in Windows sesion (I have a SpeedFan shortcut in Start up folder). When I exit SpeedFan and start it again this problem never arise.

The same problem occured on previous version of SpeedFan.

Might it be that you selected to control the same PWM with several temps? If this is your case, then all those temps must allow the temp to lower. If 4 temps are controlling the same speed, it is unlikely that them all will be lowering at the same time.

So, it is not possible to controll one PWM with several temps?

I use Shuttle XPC, which uses one central fan - the speed of this fan affects CPU, Chipset and HDD temperatures... I think it is a very usefull feature to controll one PWM with several temps - maybe you will add support for it to one of future versions? ;-)

Thank you for great program.

I have misunderstood your answer when I have read it for the firs time...

I am 100% sure that all temperatures that controll PWM1 are lower then desired values when the problem occurs.
It occurs only sometimes after Windows were loaded. When I restart Speedfan, the problem never happens in the same Windows session. It happens again only after next boot of Windows (but not after every boot - the propability is about 33-50%)...

Seems to be about the same problem I reported here:
http://www.bugtrack.almico.com/view.php?id=160
In my case it will eventually go to the minimum value, but it may take 10 to 15 minutes. Of course all temperatures are below the desired value.

Since when the ACPI temperature was finally detected by SpeedFan, a minor configuration issue might arise. The problem is that newly discovered temperatures are "linked" to available SPEEDs by default. Since SpeedFan lowers fan speeds only when all controlling temperatures are lowering (otherwise it would mean that the current fan speed is needed to keep the temperature stable), an ACPI temp that never changes can cause SpeedFan never to lower fan speeds. Please, notice that ACPI temperatures might be updated every several seconds, thus causing SpeedFan to react slowly to temperature changes.

You say that "SpeedFan lowers fan speeds only when all controlling temperatures are lowering" and this is certainly the problem. When the system starts all temperatures are around 20

Why should SpeedFan lower fan speeds if temperatures are not lowering? The problem is not that SpeedFan is not lowering fan speeds, but that your temperatures are not lowering. Why should it be an error when SpeedFan does not lower fan speeds when you say that temperatures "go up"?
Anyway: if you have a look at the help file, you will be able to set MAX SPEEDs to the value you prefer and a fine tune of the WARNING temperature will achieve your goal.

After a cold start, even with very little charge on the CPU, the temperature in the box necessarily goes up and so does the CPU temperature. This period can last for 15 minutes. Keeping a high fan speed, and a high noise, during that period is not necessary. It fact it doesn't even affect the temperature rise.

Setting the MAX SPEED to zero to solve this problem does not seem the right thing to do. :-)

I'm sure you can find some more interesting values out of the remaining 98 available :-)
The point is: why should SpeedFan lower fan speeds if temps are raising?
Since the only answer is "because I want it to", all you have to do is instruct SpeedFan to do so. You might (I will try to help you to find something useful out of those 98 values :-)) set MAX SPEED to 50% (this value depends on a lor of factors) and the WARNING TEMP to, say, 55C. I'm sure you can read my FAQs and the help file about how to select those values.

I've been a SpeedFan enthousiastic user for a long long time. Be sure I read all the FAQs and help files. :-)
This particular machine is indeed a bit special with respect to SpeedFan. See:
http://www.bugtrack.almico.com/view.php?id=93 for details.
MAX SPEED is set to 10%, WARNING TEMP is the default 40C. The fan is already very noisy at 1% and that's why I would prefer SpeedFan to put it at zero when the CPU temp rises slowly from 20 to 40C. But even if it's not possible it won't prevent me from using your fantastic program. :-)

Reading your reports, I can see that:
 -> PWM 1 mode : Software controlled
 -> PWM 2 mode : ON/OFF
 -> PWM 3 mode : Software controlled
 -> PWMOUT clock : 0.75M

I assume you changed PWM 2 MODE to SOFTWARE CONTROLLED too (even though I can't see this setting in the report).
I can see that PWMOUT CLOCK is set to 0.75M. The usual value is 3M. Did you experiment with it?

This machine is at home and I'm at work.
I remember setting PWM 1 and PWM 2 mode to MANUAL following your instructions accompanying a beta on January 15. Ever since I checked they stayed on MANUAL with v. 4.20 and 4.21. The fan is controlled by PWM 2 and I don't remember seeing a PWM 3 and experimenting with PWMOUT clock. Hope that helps but I doubt, sorry.
