Description | Speedfan 4.44 beta 4 does not smoothly control the CPU_FAN. The RPM jumps from 1790 to over 4000 RPM and then falls back to 1790 RPM as can be seen in the attached screenshot. FanControl detects 3 fans on the SB 7xx/8xx PM2 chip on the ISA bus but no fan speeds are detected. 5 Fans are detected on the IT8721F chip on the ISA bus but only three register their speeds. 3 fans are detected on the ATK0110 on the ACPI bus and register their speeds On the 'Speeds' tab of the configure window: 3 fans on the B 7xx/8xx PM2 chip are available for selection. Only 3 of the 5 fans on the IT8721F chip are available for selection. The fans on the ATK0110 chip are not shown. | ||||
Steps To Reproduce | Just monitor the system. The system is not under any load when this happens with no programs running open. Task Manager does not report any increase in CPU activity. | ||||
Additional Information | The Aus M4A88TD-M EVO/USB3 motherboard (http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3/M4A88TDM_EVOUSB3/) is configured with a single four pin fan CPU_FAN and two three pin fans:chassis fan CHA_FAN & power fan PWR_FAN. The PWR_FAN runs at a constant speed and can not be controlled. CHA_FAN is controlled and does not show the same behaviour as the CPU_FAN. The boards BIOS as a Q-FAN control feature to automatically control the fan CPU and Chassis fan speeds. This has been disabled to allow FanControl to control the fans. | ||||

I think you are confusing "fans" with "speeds", or, in other words, "fan speed reporting" with "fan pwm control". The number of reported fan speeds and of pwm controls is not linked in any way. The partial report shows that the ATK0110 is reporting three fan speeds: ATK0110 on ACPI at $0 CPU : 1839 min=1730 max=4272 mean=1834 ATK0110 on ACPI at $0 Chassis : 0 min=0 max=1790 mean=0 ATK0110 on ACPI at $0 Power : 1308 min=1271 max=1310 mean=1308 Some of the features (temps, rpms, pwms, ...) that SpeedFan finds on any hardware might not be actually used. You should enter CONFIGURE and choose the readings that you prefer to see. Some readings might be available from two sources, but the underlying element is the same. Most likely, most ATK readings ara available through the IT8721F. About the odd fan speed of the CPU fan, are you sure that it is SpeedFan that toggles between those two levels? Did you read the help file about fan control setup? As far as I can see, you configured SpeedFan so that both CPU TEMP and TEMP3 are influencing the same PWM (speed). Is this what you wanted? |

Hi Alfredo, thank you for your note. I have now read through the help file and reviewed my settings. The CPU fan speed is only effected by the CPU temperture. The Chassis fan speed is effected by the motherboard and hard disk tempertures. The Power fan is a constant speed fan so I don't try to control it. In the Configure, Advance section I selected the IT8721F chip and set PWM 1, PWM 2 and PWM 3 mode to Software controlled. I also modified the PWMOUT clock from 6M to 3M as suggested in the Help file. I also uploaded the complete report as you asked. The spikes in CPU RPM speeds to over 4000 RPM are still occuring. |

The correct PWMOUT to use depends on the fans too. Use the one that works best with your fans. To see what is going on, please enable logging and log at least CPU TEMP, FAN RPM and the relevant PWM. Upload the log file when it contains the evidence. Thank you. |

By the way: do you physically hear the fan double its speed? Might it just be a problem reporting the RPMs? |
