Summary | 0001783: Odd temperatures reported on Asus P8H67-M PRO
Description | fanspeed reports very high and bad cpu temperature: 92°C (varying), when asus monitoring utility report 27°C. in addition, fanspeed report Cores temperature varying between 37 and 41°C... more strange, when cpu charge rise, fanspeed temperature decrease.... mobo temperature reading is correct. same problem with 4.44 beta4
Steps To Reproduce | n/a | ||||
Additional Information | mobo: asus P8H67-M PRO cpu: core i5 2500 vga: HD6870 from gigabyte

Usually, reported CORE temperatures are more precise than those from any other source. 92C might be an unused temperature sensor (that Asus didn't use or didn't connected as required by the datasheet). I don't know what a "fanspeed temperature" is. Sorry. |
I think 'fanspeed' == 'SpeedFan'... |
yes, speedfan not fanspeed, sorry. where does the temperature in the asus utility (and the efi-bios) come from? and what is the real temperature: the one from asus, or from core reading, 10°C higher? |
27 °C is too low for a core temperature, so I suppose that's the external temperature of the CPU case. Most likely, you'll find the same temperature reported by one of the sensor inputs detected by SpeedFan, you'll just have to identify it and label it accordingly. It's normal that the external CPU temperature is lower than the core temperatures. The core temps reported by SpeedFan sound right too, between 37 and 41 in idle, that's quite common for your CPU. So, both readings are 'real' - they just refer to different things. When you're saying 'when cpu charge rise, fanspeed temperature decrease', what temperature reported by SpeedFan are you referring to? |
on my previous mobo and cpu (asus maximus and c2d e8400), the difference between cpu and core was lower when idling, maybe 2 or 3°, not more. here it's 10°. maybe the core temp is correct I don't know, this proco is new for me, but in this case it's the highest temp I ever seen with the watercooling system I use (again: when idling). I know the trick, but none of the speedfan temperature match the one reported by asus utility. it looks like one sensor is not detected by speedfan. the temperature I refer to is the CPU temp in speedfan: it becomes lower as the real temperature rise, starting from 85-90° idling, falling to 40° after a while.... I also tried cpuid hardware monitor: cpu temp keeps switching from 0° to 64°, system temp is ok, and core temps are the same as speedfan. the gpu temp is also correct (not reported in speedfan). fan speeds are completely wrong. I will post a video if I can... I use speedfan for years without any problem, but all above appear to me as if this new items (mobo and/or cpu) are not really supported, that's why I opened this ticket. ps: sorry for my english, but it's not my native language... |
The core temps reported by SpeedFan and the external CPU temp reported by the Asus utility are OK, I think; I have the same processor as you, and I'm getting about the same values. Only in my case (Gigabyte MB), SpeedFan reports the external CPU temp as well, at about 29 °C in idle. The cores are at about 39 - 40 in idle. Regarding the strange decreasing temperature, I think there was another similar report a while ago. Yeah, here it is: http://www.bugtrack.almico.com/view.php?id=1766 Could there be something going on here? What monitoring chip does your motherboard have? |
the problem described in the link is not so similar: in my case it looks more like a charge indicator, as the value change instantly. speedfan reports nuvoton NCT6776F (?). here is the video: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xi1yyu_speedfan_tech due to the bad quality it must be in full screen if you want to see something... at 29s occt starts, you can see in speedfan window the cpu temp at 87 falling to 45 instantly. at the same time core temp climb from 34 to 43. 10° is normal, but again those values are a little bit higher than usual (for me). the value in asus window (middle bottom) doesn't change, but it will rise later and slowly: the sensor should be on the motherboard. I don't know what are SMIOVT temperatures. |
Please, upload (there's a button for this) here the output of a SEND REPORT so that I can see what you are currently referring to by "CPU temperature". There can be several sources. After reading your description I think that sensor, as I said before, is simply unused. |
upload done... |

Alfredo is obviously the only one qualified to take this further, but, for my part, I'd be curious to see how the AUX sensor input changes under the same circumstances (idle, then max load). Something's definitely odd in there. That Asus tool needs to take that temperature from somewhere... Besides that, as far as I can see, the core temps are below 35 C in idle, and barely over 45 under load; I don't have experience with watercooling systems, but I'd say those are great temperatures. You could just set up the fan control rules to depend on core temps (and the system temp), and not worry about those other inputs, at least for now. Personally, I never used the external CPU temp for anything, I prefer the core temps. |
you are right, and that's what I am doing: the cpu fan speed is configured to depend on cores temperature. it's not really a problem, I simply wish to improve speedfan efficiency and compatibility. setting is quite simple with watercooling you know, minimum is set at 30% as you can see on the video, then 40% at 60° (which never occurred yet!). that's why I love watercooling: cool and quite! the aux temp remain the same, 77-78°, idling or full charge. looks like this one is not connected either. |
At this stage, I'd say the Asus tool is taking the average of the four core temps, subtracting 10 C from it, putting some time delay in, and displaying the result as the CPU temp... I'm mostly joking, but such tricks are not unheard of. |
@al9000 I can see no uploaded file on this page :-( |
well, I used the send report feature in the program... |
