| Description | MoBo ASRock 870 Extreme3 It has 5 FAN headers: 1x 4pin CPU 1x 4pin Chassis FAN 2x 3pin Chassis FAN 1x 3pin Power FAN The 3pin headers are controlled by SB 850, 4pin headers by Winbond W83677HG-I The FAN speed settings work for 3pin headers, but for the 4pin Chassis header controlled by Winbond (CHASSIS 1 FAN/PWM 1/FAN 1) there is no PWM Type setting, which would let me choose Voltage or PWM. Because I have a 3pin FAN connected there, it stays on 100% speed all the time. Also, the PWM CLOCK setting is missing. Note: when I launched older version of SpeedFan on this MoBo, the Winbond chip and SB wasn't properly recognized, but despite that, there was a PWM CLOCK setting and it worked (I played with it and could hear the difference in fans' whine). What it appears to be is that Winbond W83677HG-I isn't fully/properly supported by SpeedFan. The BIOS has only two settings for Chassis fans, [Full On] and [Manual], all fans set to [Manual]. Same for SpeedFan, all PWM modes set to manual. Tried all the other settings for FAN1, no change. Also SpeedFan shows two more fans and speeds for Winbond (Aux and Aux1), but there are no headers for them on the MoBo. | ||||

Also, the CPU Fan (4pin controlled by Winbond) cannot be stopped, which indicates wrong default PWM Type setting for it (probably defaults to Voltage while it should be PWM). Setting it's speed to 0% decreases it's speed to about 1200RPM, so a long way from stopping it. It is the same for both fans in SpeedFan and in ASRock OC Tuner as well (no control on Chassis1 3 pin fan on 4 pin header and cannot go lower with CPU Fan's speed). The BIOS does not feature a PWM type setting. But, as I mentioned, PWM Clock was in older SpeedFan and was working, so maybe the PWM Type can be set as well? |

W83677HG-I is fully supported. Consider that if the fan header is 4-pin you should use a 4-wire fan. It is not just a matter of switching from PWM to DC mode. Additional circuitry is needed. About the PWM fan not stopping, it can be either by motherboard design or by fan design. It is not SpeedFan's fault. That said, I might consider adding PWM/DC switching, but, AFAIK, it won't help. |

Well, I'm not sure about the "fully supported", as like I said, there was for example an PWM Clock option (on older SpeedFan) which worked and was useful. In my opinion, it's better to have PWM/DC switch which might or might not work, than don't have it at all :) Thanks for your attention! |

To some extent I agree, but consider that, in theory, I can't know if changing that option the wrong way could harm some circuit. |

Of course, I imagine that switching from PWM to DC equals diverting the route from PWM circuit through intermediate DAC to fan header, while on PWM mode the PWM generator can be (nearly) directly connected to the fan header. I might have assumed that the option is unavailable on my motherboard, because the devs were too lazy to implement it in BIOS so the SpeedFan assumes it's not there, or it was me being a cheap bastard that should have bought a better MoBo and stop complaining. I agree with you - better to be safe than sorry. But, could PWM Clock harm anything and why has it disappeared? |

Actually, I might add back those options in the future. The problem is that it requires some work to make them work, so I often work on other features :-) Basically, all you need is a 4-wire fan. I don't think this is a SpeedFan issue (and certainly it shouldn't have been marked "major" when opened :-)). |

Sorry for "major", must've been selected by mistake. You're right, focus on and prioritize important features. Sorry for wasting your time, delete this fail ticket. The fan was driving me nuts (92mm, 1800RPM and utterly sh*tty bearings). I fixed it's speed control issue - threw it away :) |
