Summary | 0001400: Fan speeds reset to about 50% every few seconds after speed fan starts
Description | All fan speeds reset to about 50% every few seconds after speed fan starts. Changing the speeds with speed fan only lasts a few seconds. This is different than the system's natural fan speeds. This persists after speed fan exits. The issue also remains after a system standby. If the system is hibernated speedfan works as expected until the next time speed fan is re-opened.
Steps To Reproduce | (seems specific to this hardware) 1. open speedfan

For some reason the bug tracking software has changed "~ 50%" (approximately 50%) to some sort of note/hyperlink to a really old, unrelated, bug report. Please correct. |
Correct me if I'm wrong. If you let SpeedFan change fan speeds, SpeedFan's selection is soon overriden and fan speeds revert to about 50%. I have troubles understanding what "This persists after speed fan exits" actually means. If you exit SpeedFan, SpeedFan will no longer be able to change fan speeds. How can you then observe the same behaviour? |
It is overridden in moments, it may say speed: 100%, and then I hear the (audible) speed drop to about 50%, the CPU is cool so the speed setting drops to 90% and the (audible) speed goes UP (from 50% to 90%), moments later its still showing 90% but the effective speed (both fans) goes back to about 50%. Normally (on most systems, and this system if I hibernate and resume the system after opening speedfan), the fan speeds remain at whatever speedfan last set them to, but on this system (opening speedfan without hibernating), the speeds go back to 50% (both fans). So if I turn both fans off (or to 100%), and quickly exit they got back to about 50% after speed fan exits. It almost seems like speed fan is messing something up (in memory) with the system that powering off (with hibernate) clears. If there was a debug version that added delays between the lines in the initialization I could tell you which line starts the abnormal behavior. |
Also there is one bit of info I forgot to mention (not really a bug): If I set the fan speed to full and exit speedfan and reboot, the fans remain at full speed even after the reboot. Is there anything I can do at this point to help resolve this issue? |
Using 4.39 beta 7, symptoms are identical, no changes. |
4.41 beta 15, no real changes in regards to this bug. Any chance you can add an option for debug delay between the stages of initialization? maybe more debug lines too? Guessing at random, maybe these lines are important: none at $3E8 msg : ERROR info1 : CMD=$FFFF DATA=$0001 S1=$0000 S2=$0000 none at $3E8 msg : ERROR info1 : CMD=$FFFF DATA=$0002 S1=$0000 S2=$0000 none at $3E8 msg : ERROR info1 : CMD=$FFFF DATA=$0003 S1=$0000 S2=$0000 none at $3E8 msg : ERROR info1 : CMD=$FFFF DATA=$0004 S1=$0000 S2=$0000 SMBus msg : 11:49:43.645 Unsuccessful WRITEQUICK $00 to $44 SMBus msg : 11:49:43.645 Unsuccessful WRITEQUICK $00 to $44 |
