Summary | 0001185: the speed of 3-pin fan on SYS_FAN1 header doesn't change
Description | I don't understand how or why, but I can not control the speed of the fan connected on my SYS_FAN1 motherboard header. I have tried several 3-pin fans but whatever speed (in percent) I set in speedfan they keep spinning at full maximum speed (@1600rpm).
Additional Information | SYS_FAN1 header is connected to the PWM3 sensor according to SpeedFAN. In the advanced tab of SpeedFAN I have set 'PWM 3 mode' to 'Software controlled' (see screenshot in the attachment)

What motherboard do you have? |
Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6 (BIOS version: F6) The fan mode in the BIOS is set as 'Voltage mode' as I don't have any 4-pin fans. Fans are connected on the following motherboard headers: 4 pin header CPU_FAN (3-pins 120mm fan connected, Processor fan) 3 pin header PWR_FAN (2-pin 120mm fan connected, PSU fan) 3 pin header SYS_FAN1 (3-pin 120mm fan connected |
Are you sure that header can be controlled? What chip does Gigabyte use on that board? @edit According to the German Gigabyte forum, the SYS_FAN1 header cannot be controlled. |
The sensor chip supposedly is ITE IT8718F, as can be seen in the attached screenshot. I have spitted through the manual and finally came across the answer. (see the 2nd attachment called 'fan_headers' and it will become clear) So stupid of me, I did not notice it before... there is no speed control wiring on SYS_FAN1 header. I think it's NOT an issue of speedfan but a motherboard header wiring issue or limitation. But there is one great question: Why does SpeedFAN mention an uncontrollable fan header in the "Speeds" tab if, on this header, only rpm monitoring is possible? (Only because the header is connected to a sensor maybe?) with uncontrollable I mean that the rotation speed of the fan(s) isn't adjustable... |

You should ask the manufacturer to know if the needed circuitry is in place. |
Speedfan always finds all features/capabilities of the chip, in this case ITE IT8718F. According to the IT8718F manual, the chip can monitor 5 and control 3 fans. That's why you see the option in the "Speeds" menu. Unfortunatly, motherboard makers often do not use all features the chip has to offer. |
Norman02us is right. |
I think this issue can be regarded as resolved. |
Ok norman02us, thank you for the clear & detailed information. It's a pity that apparently not all the features of the ITE chip are made operable on some motherboards (like I'm fed up with such one now). :-\ |
I totally understand that. Gigabyte is not the only one. Asus also cuts some features of the Winbond chips they use. |
