Summary0001090: EZtune Monitor control software causes Speedfan to race.
DescriptionEZtune 1.51 (Gateway monitor tuning and control software) and Speedfan don't play well together. If they start together or run together speedfan will eventually start racing, using 100% of 1 core.

EZtune will also start to periodically cycle 0 - 60% cpu usage.
Steps To ReproduceSet both programs to start on windows boot
wait indeterminate time
Additional Informationspeedfan appears to be trying and failing to scan the SMBus

Shutting down then restarting both programs temporarily solves problem

I never used that other tool, but they seem to be the same kind of app and this means that can collide. If you have a chip on the video card that is reached using I2C (SMBus), run SpeedFan with /NONVIDIAI2C command line parameter and let me know.

I'll try /nonvidiai2c. The EZtune software is Gateway's screen control software. It is written by Portrait Labs; I have an error report in with them also. It allows auto-pivoting of monitor (desktop automatically shifts to 90 degree orientation when pivoted) and on-screen control of monitor color tuning and PiP features. It probably uses the smbus to communicate the state of the monitor to the controlling software.

Edit: I've now run /nonvidiai2c for 2 or 3 hours and no racing. Smbus probe (as shown in debug window) doesn't appear to be constantly retrying and failing either. Problem of course is no GPU temp or fan control.

Good Job, I don't know what you did but I think 442 has solved this issue. 12 hours uptime (without /nonvidia) and NO racing yet.

thanks

edit: hmm I spoke too soon. It took 12+ hours but it happened again.

I've got a bit more information. I recently put an Nvidia 8800 gts in the system and moved the 7800 gtx to another system. Both cards seem to have the same or similar issues. Without the /nonvidia2ic switch activated speedfan initially attempts and succeeds to probe the SM bus. Then after a few minutes attempts to re-probe the bus and fails. If the EZtune Pivot software is active this repeated probing eventually causes one or both of these processes (ie speedfan or pivot) to go into a race condition. Even if the pivot software is not active speedfan repeatedly retries (and fails) probing the bus. This happens on a system without Pivot software installed but it doesn't seem to cause any major issues.

My off the cuff impression is that the two programs are attempting to access the same address space and have an issue with timing or queing. There may be other software contributing to the problem also that I've yet to identify.

So basically I'm left with disabling Nvidiai2c probe and losing a few monitoring features.

So far so good with the new 3451 beta. Did you make changes change sm bus probing?
